Gold
Gold futures started the week on a positive note on bargain buying after big fall last week as the metal’s safe-haven appeal waned amid easing concerns over the global economic outlook.
Gold futures for February delivery are trading up $3 at $ 1662 per ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. On Friday, it retreated 0.5% to settle the week at $1,658.80 a troy ounce.
On the week, gold futures prices lost 1.5%, the biggest weekly decline since the week ended December 23. Gold may find near-term support at $1,650 a troy ounce, and resistance near $1,685.35.
In the week ahead, gold traders will be eyeing the Federal Reserve’s policy-setting meeting on Wednesday, for further hints on the future of its ultra-loose monetary policy.
Investors will also be anticipating Wednesday’s preliminary data on U.S. fourth quarter economic growth, as well as Friday’s U.S. nonfarm payrolls report, as markets attempt to gauge the strength of the U.S. economic recovery.
Any improvement in the U.S. economy could scale back expectations for further easing from the Fed, boosting the U.S. dollar and weighing on greenback-denominated commodity prices.
MCX February gold futures are trading flat at Rs 30342 per 10 grams. It may face a resistance near Rs 31400 levels and support near Rs 30300 levels.
